Blurry, dark, just-a-second-too-late family photos? I’ve been there. As a self taught family photographer with two girls who barely look at the camera at best – or run screaming from the sight of it at worst – I’ve learned the hard way how to get great family shots. Here, some foolproof tips that I rely on to get warm, relaxed, gorgeous shots every time.
TIP FOR AMAZING FAMILY PHOTOS #1: SHOOT IN DOORWAYS
Nice light is the single most important thing for any photo. Ever. If the light’s too strong you’ll have a all-white shot with pitch-black sockets for eyeballs. If the light’s too weak you’ll have a muddy, drab image with nothing in focus. So, where can you find nice light at home and out and about? Under cover. But not just any cover. You want somewhere with a little overhang that let’s as much light in horizontally as possible. And yep, there’s a name for that: a doorway. Put your bub down nearby and put your back to the light source and snap away knowing you’re working with the softest, sweetest, most flattering light around.
TIP FOR AMAZING FAMILY PHOTOS #2: KEEP THE TREATS COMING
It’s time to bend the rules a little. Let’s face it: bub’s not interested in taking a pretty picture. So if you have a great shot in mind and you’re keen to get bub sitting still for 30 second to take it, make it worth their while by packing a spoonful of sugar.
TIP FOR AMAZING FAMILY PHOTOS #3: PREPARATION MAKES MAGIC
Get a Pinterest board going. Check out what colours, poses and locations that you really like. Finding a great wall takes a bit of research, but it’s so worth it if the style of it perfectly matches you and your family.
AND ONE MORE THING…
Try something different. Something that really works in the photo might not be what you’ve planned – like pulling your straps down for some skin-on-skin baby cuddle – but it might turn out to be amazing.
